If you are not one who spends a lot of time on social media you may not even know what an influencer is, but this made up word means exactly what you're probably thinking. You see, a social media influencer is someone who uses social media as a platform to influence their followers. Whether their goal is to get you to buy something, do something or simply follow along with their life.... what they do in their every day is documented on different medias and broadcast for the world to see and what they do often causes us to do the same things. In others words, a social media influencer is a small scale celebrity but because they post so much of their lives on the internet people feel as though they are a close friend. This illusion gives businesses an in with millennials because marketers know that millennials are more likely to buy from people they know and trust. Or at least people they think they know and hope they can trust.

With that being said, today we are going to take a look at a couple of social media influencers in multiple different industries. Then we will analyze some similarities between them so that we can all get a better look at what makes one an influencer and how you too could become one!

We'll be going through a list of some of the top influencers created by hubspot.com so if you are interested in checking out the entire list then don't be afraid to head on over to HubSpot and do so!

First we are going to dive into the food industry and that means Jamie Oliver is are superstar of the minute. At this point in time, Jamie has 7.1 Million Followers on Instagram and is averaging around 600,000 views on any videos he posts and 30,000 likes on each image.

Now, after taking a look at his Instagram feed above you may be wondering how, why? It's true that Jamie doesn't have the most cohesive and aesthetically pleasuring feed here. His colors aren't all the same, he posts random Star Wars memes and some of his photos are clearly not taken on a high resolution camera. But, if you keep scrolling you will notice that he posts between two and three times a day and that alone is enough to drive engagements up according to coschedule.com. And on top of that he uses super general hashtags like #Easter and #Recipes to get better reach and maybe even end up on someones explore page.

If you're thinking he owes all of his "clout" to the many TV shows he has appeared on or the restaurants that have been opened under his name then you aren't wrong. We can't deny that already being a famous chef helps grow you Instagram influence. However, with over a million more followers than Gordon Ramsey you've got to wonder what it is that makes Jamie stand out more.

Next up is going to be Annette White an Author, Traveler, Blogger and Restaurant owner according to her Instagram Bio.

And let's be honest, with images like that filling up ones page how could you not want to follow along?

Annette is one of those people who have been able to successfully throw away their day job for "countless adventure" as she would say and to any on lookers who sit in an office from 9-5 every day that sounds like a dream. We believe that there is a 'Dream-Life' aroma that follows travel bloggers such as Annette and when people can see their photos and feel like they are on vacation, getting a follow becomes easy.

Now, aside from that Annette is a frequent Story poster meaning she keeps her followers updated with her life throughout the entire day most days. This helps drive engagement because again, people begin to feel like they personally know the influencer when they get to see every move they make. And eventually, someone‘s personality alone is enough to keep people following.

Lastly we'll look at Janni Olsson Deler, HubSpot's number one lifestyle influencer.

Now, with Janni you might be wondering... is it the swedish accent or maybe the fact that she lives in Monaco? Oh wait! Maybe, it's because she is married to once professional skier Jon Olsson Deler. Truthfully, it's all of it. Janni has a cool life and people who don't get to live as adventurous, free spirited, and extravagant lives love to follow people who do.

Yet, let's not overlook the frequency of posts, use of hashtags and tagging people that she does. Also it is important to see how she engages with other influencers. Janni is always commenting on other high profile people's pages and by doing so she also gains reach.

Another thing that Janni does as well as other influencers is that she has created a clothing brand called C'est Normal. This creates even more revenue for her and allows for more extravagance.

All in all, we won't say there is some magic formula to becoming an influencer but following your dreams, going and living a unique life, posting often and using hashtags sure doesn't hurt!
